Renshaw's Stellar Performance

In a remarkable display, Australian batsman Matt Renshaw achieved the fourth-highest score by an Australian in South Africa, leading his team to a stunning comeback in the first Test against the reigning World Test champions in Durban. Coming to bat with the score at 84/4, after the quick dismissals of key players Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, Renshaw was the last man out, amassing 190 runs off 397 balls, including 21 boundaries and a six.

Historic Milestones Just Out of Reach

Renshaw's innings places him just 10 runs shy of a double century, a feat only achieved by three Australians in South Africa: Greg Blewett (214* in 1997), Adam Gilchrist (204* in 2002), and Herbie Collins (203 in 1921).

Key Partnerships Bolster Australia's Total

The left-handed batsman formed crucial partnerships, including an 86-run partnership for the seventh wicket with captain Pat Cummins, who scored 43 runs off 98 balls, and a significant 134-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Nathan Lyon, who contributed 27 runs off 92 balls. This partnership ranks as the third-highest for that wicket by an Australian duo in Test history, trailing the 163-run record set by Phil Hughes and Ashton Agar against England in 2013.

By the time Renshaw was dismissed, Australia had posted a formidable total of 390 runs. Other notable contributions included Marnus Labuschagne with 37 runs off 58 balls and Steve Smith with 25 runs off 53 balls, after the team faced early challenges at 24 runs for two wickets.

Renshaw's Resurgence in Form

This innings marks Renshaw's highest Test score and his first century in nine years, following a score of 184 against Pakistan in Sydney. Over 16 Tests and 26 innings, the 30-year-old has accumulated 843 runs at an average of 35.12, including two centuries and three fifties.

Earlier in September, Renshaw also celebrated his first ODI century against Zimbabwe. In total, across all formats, he has scored 775 runs in 23 matches and 22 innings, averaging 38.75 with two centuries and three fifties.
