Massive Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alerts Across Japan and Beyond
Tsunami Waves Captured in Viral Footage
A recently circulated video shows tsunami waves approaching Japan's coastline.
On Wednesday morning, a powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck Russia's Far East, generating minor tsunami waves that reached Japan and Alaska. This seismic event also led to tsunami warnings being issued for Hawaii, North and Central America, and various Pacific islands extending down to New Zealand.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a tsunami measuring 50 centimeters (1.6 feet) was recorded at Ishinomaki port in northern Japan, marking the highest wave detected so far, with more significant waves still on the way, as noted by Shiji Kiyomoto, an official in earthquake and tsunami response.
Impact of the Earthquake and Tsunami Alerts
This earthquake is considered the most powerful globally since the 9.0 magnitude quake that struck off northeast Japan in March 2011, which resulted in a catastrophic tsunami and nuclear plant meltdowns. Only a handful of earthquakes of greater magnitude have been documented worldwide.
The tsunami alert has caused significant disruptions in transportation across Japan. Ferry services between Hokkaido and Aomori, as well as routes connecting Tokyo to nearby islands, have been halted. Additionally, some local train services faced suspensions or delays, and Sendai Airport temporarily closed its runway.
Fortunately, Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency has reported no injuries or damages thus far. In light of the tsunami warnings, the agency has advised over 900,000 residents across 133 municipalities along the Pacific coast, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, to evacuate.
