Mary Kom Reflects on Her Challenging Journey
In a candid revelation, M C Mary Kom shared her thoughts on the 'darkest phase' of her life, which has been marked by a painful divorce, financial struggles, and emotional turmoil. The six-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist expressed her frustration over the negative portrayal of her situation in the media and on social platforms.
"What’s the point of all that I achieved?" she questioned, highlighting the slander she has faced. The 43-year-old athlete, who recently separated from her husband Onler after over two decades of marriage, stated that the divorce, which occurred more than two years ago, has been a source of public scrutiny.
Mary revealed that her marriage began to unravel after an injury prior to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which forced her to confront uncomfortable truths about her relationship. "I was bedridden for several months and realized that the man I trusted was not who I thought he was," she explained.
Despite her attempts to keep the divorce private, she felt compelled to speak out due to ongoing attacks on her character. She accused Onler of mismanaging her finances, claiming he took loans and mortgaged properties in her name without her consent.
In response to these allegations, Onler denied any wrongdoing. Mary expressed her distress over being labeled greedy in media reports, stating that personal discussions between them have been misrepresented.
As a mother of three sons and a daughter, Mary Kom is focused on rebuilding her life and finances through endorsements and public appearances. "I work hard for my kids; it’s been incredibly tough, but I have to keep going for them," she said.
Known as 'Magnificent Mary,' she remains one of India's most celebrated boxers, with a legacy that includes a world title shortly after returning from maternity leave. Her life story, which was adapted into a biopic featuring Priyanka Chopra, continues to evolve with new challenges. "My life feels like an ongoing boxing match, but I believe God will give me the strength to persevere," she concluded.
