Mark Hamill's Controversial Post About Trump Sparks Backlash
Hamill's Provocative Bluesky Post
Mark Hamill, widely recognized for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump for several years. However, a recent post he made on Bluesky has stirred significant controversy, prompting him to retract it.
Details of the Controversial Image
On Wednesday, Hamill shared an AI-generated image on Bluesky depicting Trump lying in a grave, complete with a headstone inscribed with the years 1946 to 2024. Accompanying the image, Hamill expressed a desire for Trump to witness his "inevitable devastating loss in the midterms," and called for accountability for what he termed "unprecedented corruption." He further stated that Trump should face impeachment, conviction, and humiliation for his alleged crimes, asserting that he would be "disgraced in the history books, forevermore." By Thursday afternoon, the post had been removed from his profile.
White House's Reaction
The White House's rapid response team did not hold back in their criticism. They labeled Hamill as "one sick individual" in a post on X, claiming that his rhetoric was reminiscent of the language that has incited three assassination attempts against the President in the past two years. Trump has yet to address the situation directly.
This response comes in light of a recent incident where a man opened fire outside the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, where Trump and other officials were present. The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from California, has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president, among other offenses, and has not yet entered a plea.
Hamill's Follow-Up Statement
After deleting the post, Hamill did not remain silent. He issued a limited apology on Bluesky, stating that he was "wishing him the opposite of dead" and expressed regret if the image was deemed inappropriate. He then provided what he termed an "Accurate Edit for Clarity," explaining that his original intent was for Trump to live long enough to face justice for his actions. A representative for Hamill directed NBC News to this follow-up when asked for further comments. Whether this clarification appeased his critics remains uncertain.
