In a remarkable display of skill, Marizanne Kapp propelled South Africa to a thrilling six-wicket victory against India during the Women's T20 World Cup held in Manchester on Sunday, according to the ICC.

Kapp's bowling figures of 2/27 helped limit India to a total of 158/7. She then showcased her batting prowess by scoring an unbeaten 81, which included four impressive sixes, leading her team to a successful chase of 161/4 in just 19.1 overs. This achievement marks South Africa's highest successful chase in the history of the Women's T20 World Cup and the third highest overall. This victory against a formidable opponent could be the turning point for the Proteas after two previous underwhelming performances.

For India, this match marked their first loss of the tournament.

India's Innings Overview

Choosing to bat first, India started strong with Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma scoring 23 runs in the initial two overs.

However, Marizanne Kapp quickly changed the momentum by dismissing Mandhana, who was caught attempting a scoop shot that left her stumps exposed.

Shabnim Ismail then struck a significant blow by getting rid of the in-form Verma, who had contributed a brisk 31 runs, including four boundaries and the only six of the innings.

Despite a solid start with a score of 59/2 during the power play, India failed to capitalize on their momentum. All batters got starts but could not convert them into substantial scores. Harmanpreet Kaur, in her 200th T20I match, scored 24 runs, while Deepti Sharma added a quick 29 to help India surpass the 150-run mark.

The South African bowling attack, spearheaded by Kapp and Ismail (2/28), effectively contained the Indian batting lineup, conceding only 76 runs and claiming four wickets in the final ten overs.

South Africa's Chase Strategy

After the mid-innings break, India came out strong, restricting South Africa's scoring and achieving a double-wicket maiden by Sree Charani (3/24) during the last over of the powerplay, leaving South Africa at 25/2.

In a crucial moment, Kapp delivered one of the tournament's standout performances, forming a 97-run partnership with Tazmin Brits (40) to stabilize South Africa's innings.

The South African batters skillfully navigated the challenging early phase, finding gaps and maintaining a steady scoring rate. They accelerated their scoring in the 15th over, amassing 16 runs.

Despite losing Brits and Nadine De Klerk, Kapp continued to apply pressure on India with aggressive batting.

With 18 runs needed in the last two overs, Kapp hit two sixes off Deepti Sharma, who is the joint-highest wicket-taker in women's international cricket, scoring 16 runs in that over.

Kapp observed from the non-striker's end as Chloe Tyron sealed the victory with a thick edge that raced to the boundary. As the South African team erupted in celebration, an emotional Kapp sank to her knee, overwhelmed by her match-winning performance.
