Mass Rally in Silchar for Manipuri Autonomous Council

Silchar, Jan 7: A large number of individuals from the Manipuri community gathered in Silchar on Monday, advocating for the swift establishment of a Manipuri Autonomous Council in Assam. This rally saw participation from various regions, particularly the three districts of Barak Valley.

According to a statement from the Manipuri Autonomous Council Demand Coordination Committee, Assam (MACCOCOM), the event commenced at the Bir Tikendrajit High School ground in Manipuri Para, Itkhola, and proceeded through significant areas of the city before returning to the starting point for a public meeting. Participants included women, students, youth, and elders, all voicing their demands for the safeguarding of their identity, existence, and constitutional rights.

Kangabam Shantee Kumar Singh, the chairman of MACCOCOM, urged the state government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, to promptly make a Cabinet decision regarding the formation of an autonomous council, similar to those established for the Moran, Matak, and Koch Rajbongshi communities.

The leaders cautioned that any further delays could escalate their agitation. A memorandum reiterating their longstanding demand was subsequently submitted to the Chief Minister via the district commissioner of Cachar, as stated in the release.
