Police Action Following Gun Salute in Manipur

On Saturday, the police in Manipur initiated an investigation against unknown individuals after a gun salute took place in the Saikul area of Kangpokpi district.

This event was organized to honor the victims of the ethnic strife that erupted two years ago between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi-Hmar communities. Reports indicate that this conflict has resulted in over 260 fatalities and displaced more than 59,000 individuals.

According to a police statement on social media, local leaders and community elders were called to the police station for questioning. Authorities have conducted raids in various locations to apprehend those responsible for the event.

During these operations, law enforcement officials confiscated five single-barrel firearms and military-style uniforms from the vicinity.

The police emphasized that efforts to capture the offenders and recover additional firearms would persist, stating that those who organized the salute would face legal consequences.

A police representative noted that the display of firearms during the salute breached the conditions set by authorities for the event. The officer further mentioned that any unlawful display of weapons would not be tolerated, especially given the current President’s Rule in the state.

President’s Rule was enacted in February following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
