Manipur Police Detain Three Individuals, Including Soldier, for Extortion Activities

Imphal, Sept 19: Authorities in Manipur have apprehended three individuals, one of whom is a serving havildar in the Manipur Rifles, on charges of extortion.
According to police reports, a specialized team from the Imphal West district commandos acted on credible intelligence to arrest the suspects from their homes in the Singjamei Wangma vicinity on Thursday.
The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Okram Priyokumar Singh, 40, also known as Priyo, and Thongram Sunson Singh, 34, referred to as Uttam, both hailing from Singjamei Waikhom Leikai in Imphal West district.
The third suspect, Waikhom Amarjit Singh, 44, is a resident of Singjamei Wangma Pebiya Pandit Leikai in Imphal East district.
Police confirmed that Amarjit Singh serves as a havildar in the 1st Manipur Rifles Battalion. During the arrest, a 9 mm pistol along with a magazine containing four rounds was seized from him.
Details and images of the arrested individuals were shared by Manipur Police on social media, highlighting the recovery of the firearm from the active military personnel.
In an unrelated incident, a hand grenade was discovered near the residence of Shri Shri Gouragovind Girls College principal Lairenlakpam Jabotsakhi at Bashikhong Wangkhei Loumanbi in Imphal East district on Thursday morning.
The grenade was located around 6 am and was later retrieved by police officials.
This recent series of arrests occurs amid ongoing concerns regarding the involvement of state security forces with prohibited armed factions.
Earlier this year, in February, a 43-year-old constable driver from the Manipur Police was arrested for allegedly facilitating the recruitment of members for the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (MFL).
The constable was detained in his locality at Utlou Chanura under the jurisdiction of Nambol police station in Bishnupur district.
