Imphal, Aug 18: A group of legislators from Manipur is preparing to travel to the national capital to request assistance from central leaders regarding the urgent update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
During a press briefing at the DIPR conference hall this afternoon, government spokesperson Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh emphasized the need for a united approach to this issue, transcending political affiliations and community differences, as it significantly impacts the future of the state and its residents.
Representing the Konthoujam assembly seat, Ranjan Singh stated, “The Government is committed to addressing the concerns related to the NRC and Census, standing firmly with the people of Manipur.”
He noted that the Manipur Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution on August 5, 2022, advocating for the NRC's consideration in the state, which was reaffirmed by the Assembly on March 1, 2024.
Dr. Ranjan elaborated that the government is serious about the NRC and Census issues, which have been longstanding concerns, and that they have been actively communicating with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs regarding these matters.
Regarding the ongoing protests and bandhs, Dr. Ranjan acknowledged the right to peaceful protest as a democratic principle. However, he urged demonstrators to voice their concerns in a non-violent manner that does not disrupt the public.
Former education minister and government spokesperson Th. Radheshyam, representing the Heirok assembly constituency, reiterated the government's position that the NRC update is essential, citing worries about demographic shifts, imbalances, and illegal immigration.
Other MLAs present at the press conference included Th. Shyamkumar (Ando), P. Brojen (Wangjing-Tentha), T. Robindro (Thanga), S. Premchandra (Kumbi), Sapam Kunjakeshwor Singh (Patsoi), Thongam Shanti (Moirang), and Ashab Uddin (Jiribam).
