Focus on Illegal Immigration in Manipur

Imphal, Sept 15: The state of Manipur is increasing its efforts to tackle the issue of illegal immigration. BJP national president Nitin Nabin has assured state officials that the concerns regarding this challenge and its demographic effects will be addressed at the national level for a prompt resolution.

This commitment was made during a meeting in New Delhi involving Nabin, Manipur's Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, and BJP MLA Sapam Kunjakeswor Singh.

In a social media update, the Home Minister highlighted that the discussions focused on the significant challenge posed by illegal migration and its demographic consequences for Manipur. He noted that Nabin recognized the seriousness of the state's issues.

Konthoujam remarked that the discussions yielded a "clear and significant outcome," with Nabin promising that the matter would be taken seriously at the national level to find an "appropriate and early solution."

He connected this issue to recent comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Mumbai, where Shah reaffirmed the government's commitment to combat illegal infiltration.

“Safeguarding Manipur’s demographic integrity is crucial not just for the present but also for the future of our people and the strength of Bharat,” Konthoujam stated.

The topic of illegal immigration was also a key point during an all-party meeting led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Cabinet Hall in Imphal on Monday evening. The proposed update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state was among the issues discussed.

This meeting, which lasted approximately two-and-a-half hours and concluded around 8:30 PM, included representatives from various parties such as the BJP, Congress, CPI, CPI(M), RPI, and Forward Bloc, along with members from 14 civil society organizations (CSOs) under Kangleipak.

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh confirmed the meeting via social media, stating that political parties discussed several matters, including the NRC update in the interest of the populace.

Nahakpam Santa, convenor of the 14 CSOs Kangleipak, mentioned that the attendees agreed to urge the government to issue a Gazette notification for the NRC update in Manipur.

The meeting also resolved to form a sub-committee consisting of representatives from political parties and civil society organizations.

This panel will seek a meeting with the Union Home Minister during his upcoming visit to Manipur next month to advocate for the NRC update in the state, Santa added.
