Manipur Government Advances Resettlement Efforts for Displaced Families

Imphal, Jan 1: Approximately 10,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from over 2,200 households have been successfully resettled, with an additional 4,000 homes currently under construction, as reported by Manipur Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel in a recent press statement.

The government is actively engaging with IDP representatives through regular meetings to address their concerns and needs related to resettlement and other issues, according to the release.

In conjunction with financial initiatives, the government is also implementing security measures and confidence-building activities at both state and district levels, aiming to establish a safe environment for IDPs and build trust among community stakeholders.

By focusing on both financial assistance and security, the government aims to facilitate a smooth and secure return for displaced families to their homes, the statement added.

Following the resettlement of 54 IDPs in Imphal East district in November, an additional 257 IDPs from the Leimaram High School Relief Camp returned to their village in Bishnupur district on December 4.

It is noteworthy that the state government has recently formed state-level and district-level committees to enhance ongoing rehabilitation and resettlement efforts for IDPs.

Since the onset of the crisis in Manipur on May 3, 2023, over 250 individuals have lost their lives, and more than 50,000 have been displaced.

The state government remains committed to ensuring the welfare and dignity of IDPs who have faced significant hardships due to the prevailing law-and-order situation, and with the assistance of the Ministry of Home Affairs, it continues to provide essential support, including regular food supplies, rations, and drinking water in relief camps.
