Manipur Congress Leaders Assert Future of BJP Rule is Uncertain
Congress Leaders Discuss Future Governance in Manipur
Imphal, Dec 28: The leader of the Manipur Congress Legislature Party, Okram Ibobi Singh, expressed that the current governance by the BJP at both the national and state levels is "not a lasting situation." He emphasized that peace and harmony will thrive once the Congress party gains strength.
During the celebration of the Congress's 140th foundation day on Sunday, Singh remarked, "The BJP's rule is not eternal. We should observe how long they can maintain their authority. The upcoming elections will reveal their fate."
Singh, a former chief minister of Manipur, criticized the BJP's performance over the past three years, stating that many government departments have become ineffective and the state's financial health has deteriorated significantly.
He asserted, "I firmly believe that only with Congress in power, both at the Centre and in the state, can we establish a progressive government that fosters a harmonious living environment. True peace and coexistence will emerge when the Congress party is empowered."
Addressing issues of governance and federal relations, Ibobi Singh challenged the idea that a state can only thrive when the same political party governs at both levels, arguing that India's federal structure ensures that funds allocated in the Union Budget cannot be withheld.
He also pointed out the absence of panchayat elections and the lack of funding for local self-governance, which he believes undermines grassroots democracy.
Keisham Meghachandra, president of the Manipur Congress, emphasized the importance of party ideology and discipline among its members. He expressed confidence that the Congress government would usher in peace and development in the state, predicting that the party would regain power in the 2027 state elections.
Currently, Manipur is under President’s Rule, with BJP legislators struggling to establish a government despite multiple discussions in New Delhi. The next elections for the Manipur Legislative Assembly are scheduled for 2027.
