Imphal, May 13: The planned visit of Manipur's Chief Minister to Churachandpur on May 15 has sparked significant opposition from the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), which represents the Kuki tribes in the region.
KIM Secretary (Information) Janghaolun Haokip expressed concerns, stating that the current situation in these areas is extremely sensitive and unstable, with unresolved tensions still prevalent.
The organization cautioned that this visit, which would be the first by a sitting Chief Minister to Churachandpur since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023, could lead to new law-and-order issues in the affected hill districts.
While the Chief Minister has previously visited other hill districts without major incidents, KIM noted that the atmosphere in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal remains tense and precarious.
KIM warned of a “genuine and imminent risk” that the visit could escalate tensions, potentially destabilizing the already fragile law-and-order situation.
“Any negative developments could have serious repercussions and hinder ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy,” the statement emphasized.
The organization urged the Chief Minister to postpone any visit to Kuki-Zo areas until conditions are suitable for “safe, meaningful, and constructive engagement” with the community.
Additionally, KIM affirmed its commitment to oppose any visits by the Manipur government to Kuki-Zo populated regions until their demand for a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people is adequately addressed.
