Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh Promotes Unity at Chess Tournament and Sports League

Closing Ceremony of Chess Tournament

On Sunday, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Manipur participated in the closing ceremony of the 3rd Singjamei Constituency MLA Trophy State Level Open Chess Tournament 2026. This event was organized by the Service Recreation and Organisation of Youths (SROY) at their campus located in Singjamei Thongam Leikai, Imphal.

Focus on Peace and Unity

During his speech, the Chief Minister emphasized that the current government was established during a challenging period, and one of its primary goals is to restore peace and normalcy in the state. He likened the effort to 'threading a needle through a torn cloth,' highlighting the need for patience and careful progress.

He also mentioned the recent restoration of road connectivity between Imphal and Guwahati via Dimapur, which had been disrupted for over three years. The Chief Minister noted that discussions with various civil society organizations and stakeholders were crucial in reopening this route.

Khemchand Singh stated, 'We are all Manipuris, comprising 36 communities, and we must remain united.' He underscored the importance of unity and understanding among all communities in Manipur, attributing the progress in restoring road connections to this spirit of dialogue.

Significance of Transportation Resumption

The Chief Minister remarked that the resumption of road transportation is not just a logistical improvement but also a vital step towards achieving peace and normalcy in Manipur.

Recognition and Sports Events

The event also recognized Laitonjam Ranabir Singh, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Arm-Wrestling Federation. Other notable attendees included Th. Kanto Singh, Vice-President of SROY; L. Lokeshwar Singh, Mayor of Imphal Municipal Corporation; and several corporators.

Earlier that day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the 1st Singjamei Super League at Pishum Ground, organized by the Chingamathak Young Learners Club (CYCL), Imphal. The event featured various cultural programs, culminating in the official launch of the tournament.

In the first match, CYCL triumphed over CLSWO (Chongtham Leikai Social Welfare Organisation) with a score of 5–1, marking a successful start to the league. The event was attended by Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, MLAs, officials, players, families, and a large audience.
