Manipur CM Vows Justice After Tragic Bomb Attack Claims Two Young Lives

Tragic Incident in Bishnupur District

Imphal: On Tuesday, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Manipur announced that those accountable for the tragic deaths of two children in Bishnupur district will be identified and face strict legal action.

An official from the Chief Minister’s Office reported that Singh visited a private hospital in Imphal to check on the condition of the injured mother, whose five-year-old son and five-month-old daughter were killed instantly in a bomb explosion allegedly executed by suspected Kuki militants.

The Chief Minister shared on social media, stating: “This morning, I visited Raj Medicity to evaluate the condition of the mother who tragically lost her two children in last night’s horrific attack at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, Moirang.”

He emphasized that he has instructed officials to provide the highest level of medical assistance and support for the injured woman. “This barbaric act is an affront to humanity and a calculated attempt to disrupt the hard-won peace in Manipur. I condemn it in the strongest terms. Let it be known: those responsible will be identified and dealt with according to the law. Such acts of terror will not be tolerated,” he stated.

CM Singh reiterated, “Our government is committed to protecting every citizen. I urge everyone to unite and resist forces that threaten our collective harmony.”

The Chief Minister condemned the “cowardly bomb attack” in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, which resulted in the deaths of a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl, while their mother sustained injuries. He assured that the government would pursue the perpetrators of this heinous act and ensure justice is served promptly, as stated by the CMO.

Singh noted that whenever the government makes efforts to restore peace, sporadic violence tends to arise. He expressed concern that there are vested interests trying to derail the ongoing peace process as the state gradually returns to normalcy.

He speculated that the recent violence might be aimed at destabilizing the newly formed government, which was established by the Centre after nearly a year of President’s Rule.

In a call for calm, CM Singh urged individuals from all communities, ethnicities, and religions to reject violence. He also requested the public to avoid actions such as bandhs, blockades, and vandalism of public property, warning that these would only exacerbate the difficulties faced by citizens.

In the incident, two children lost their lives, and their mother was injured following a bomb attack allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants. A police official in Imphal reported that a powerful bomb was detonated by suspected militants at a residence in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village around 1 a.m. The explosion killed a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl instantly. Their mother, who was also in the house at the time, was injured. All three were reportedly asleep when the bomb detonated, causing significant damage to parts of the house.

Located near the mountainous Churachandpur district, Tronglaobi Awang Leikai village is home to Kuki-Zo communities. The area has experienced repeated gunfire incidents during the peak of ethnic violence in 2023 and 2024 and is considered vulnerable due to its proximity to hill positions reportedly occupied by armed Kuki militant groups.

Following the attack, furious residents blocked roads and set fire to three trucks carrying goods destined for Churachandpur district, further escalating tensions in the area. The situation in Bishnupur and other valley districts remains highly volatile.

A significant number of security forces, led by senior police officials, have been deployed in the region, and combing operations have commenced to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Local BJP MLA Shanti Singh strongly condemned the “brutal attack” in Moirang Tronglaobi village, alleging the involvement of “Kuki narco-terrorists.”

“This heinous act is nothing short of terrorism. Such inhumane actions have no place in our society and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” he stated.
