Manika Batra Questions Selection Committee's Legitimacy for Asian Games
Batra Raises Concerns Over Selection Committee's Constitutionality
Indian table tennis star Manika Batra has voiced her concerns regarding the selection process for the Asian Games team, claiming that the selection committee's formation does not adhere to the Table Tennis Federation of India's (TTFI) constitution. In a post shared on the social media platform X, Batra stated that the TTFI insisted the selection was conducted according to established rules. However, she contends that documents in her possession reveal that a nine-member committee finalized the Asian Games team, while Article 24(C)(j) of the federation's constitution restricts any sub-committee to a maximum of seven members.
Batra expressed her frustration, stating, "TTFI has claimed that the selection process was fully compliant with the rules. Yet, the documents I have indicate that a nine-member committee made the decision regarding the Asian Games team, contradicting Article 24(C)(j) of the TTFI Constitution, which limits sub-committees to seven members."
She further added, "A nine-member committee determined my fate, yet I am told the process was entirely constitutional. I leave it to the public to judge, especially those who have consistently emphasized the importance of adhering to rules equally for all."
Batra Shifts Focus Amidst Ongoing Dispute
Expressing her mental exhaustion from the ongoing controversy, Batra announced her intention to refocus on her competitive duties. Currently participating in a tournament representing India, she emphasized her commitment to her upcoming matches. Batra also conveyed her best wishes to the selected team, hoping they would bring pride to the nation.
She stated, "I am mentally drained from this battle, and for now, I am putting my sword down. I have a larger responsibility today. I am at a tournament representing India, and my full attention will now be on the upcoming competition. To the selected team, I wish you nothing but success. Go and make India proud. Jai Hind!"
Call for Transparency Following Exclusion
Previously, Batra had expressed her discontent regarding her exclusion from India's main squad for the Asian Games, clarifying that she is not seeking selection but rather demanding transparency and clear explanations for the decision. The 31-year-old Olympian was placed among the reserves when the TTFI announced a ten-member team for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
In a detailed statement following her exclusion, Batra reflected on her two-decade-long career representing India at the highest levels, acknowledging both triumphs and setbacks. However, she criticized the lack of clarity in the selection process.
She remarked, "For the past twenty years, I have had the honor of representing India at the highest level. Throughout my journey, I have accepted victories, defeats, selections, and non-selections as part of the sport. However, what I find challenging to accept is the absence of clarity and the arbitrary nature of the process. Recently, many have suggested that I am seeking a spot on the Asian Games team or special treatment. Let me clarify: I am not asking for selection or for anyone to reverse the decision. I am simply asking for answers. No specific reason for my exclusion has been communicated to me."
Concerns Over Ranking Criteria
Batra also raised questions regarding the ranking criteria utilized for selection, highlighting the inconsistencies in international rankings and inquiring about the evaluation period considered.
She stated, "I am currently ranked World No. 51. Rankings in table tennis are updated weekly and operate on a rolling points system, which raises significant questions. What timeline was used for evaluating rankings? Was it based on the last 12 months, six months, the previous two months, or just a single weekly ranking snapshot?"
