In a remarkable achievement for Himachal Pradesh, Shrejal Guleria, a young woman from Mandi district, has been appointed as a Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF). She secured an impressive 12th position nationally in the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination.
A Legacy of Service
At just 21 years old, Shrejal hails from Paddi village in the Ratti area of Balh subdivision. Her selection is particularly meaningful as she continues a family tradition of military service. Her father, Hoshiar Singh, serves as a Subedar in the Army, and her grandfather is a retired serviceman. Growing up in a disciplined and patriotic household, Shrejal was inspired to pursue a career in uniformed service from a young age.
Strong Academic Background
Shrejal attended Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Pandoh for her schooling from Class 6 to 12, where she demonstrated consistent academic performance and leadership skills. She later moved to Delhi to study BSc (Honours) in Mathematics at Delhi University. During her postgraduate studies, she dedicated herself to preparing for the CDS examination, successfully navigating one of the country's most challenging defence selection processes.
Family Support as a Driving Force
The support from Shrejal's family has been crucial to her success. Her father instilled a sense of discipline and duty, while her mother, Banita Kumari, a clerk with the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), encouraged her independence and determination. The family credits Shrejal's achievements to their collective support, clear goals, and relentless hard work.
Training Ahead at the Air Force Academy
On December 27, Shrejal departed for the Air Force Academy, where she will undergo a year of rigorous military and flying training. Upon completing this demanding program, she will officially be commissioned as a Flying Officer in the Indian Air Force, tasked with safeguarding the nation's airspace.
A Rising Star
Shrejal gained national attention in June 2021 when she participated in a virtual interaction with the Prime Minister during an online event following the cancellation of CBSE Class 12 examinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, she was a student at Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pandoh, where her grandfather also shared insights about local culture, including the traditional Mandiyali dish 'Sepu Badi' served during community feasts.

In addition to her academic and defence aspirations, Shrejal has excelled in sports, having been a member of the national basketball team. This reflects her well-rounded abilities, physical stamina, and teamwork—qualities essential for a successful career in the armed forces.
