Mandi Workshop Focuses on Enhancing Media Collaboration and AI Awareness

On Wednesday, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in Shimla hosted a media workshop titled ‘Vartalap’ in Mandi, which gathered journalists, senior officials, and subject matter experts to discuss ways to enhance information sharing, counter misinformation, and improve collaboration between the media and government.

The workshop, themed “Improving Information Dissemination,” aimed to ensure timely and reliable communication regarding public welfare initiatives, tackle the issue of fake news, and promote responsible journalism in the digital era.

As the Chief Guest, Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan (IAS) emphasized the necessity of sharing accurate information to bolster transparent governance and guarantee that government welfare programs reach those in need. He recognized the media as a crucial link between the government and the public and commended PIB for establishing a platform that encourages constructive dialogue and institutional cooperation.

Devgan also addressed the increasing significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), stating that understanding its capabilities is vital in today’s fast-paced technological environment. While AI holds great promise for transforming governance and communication, he warned that its application must be approached with responsibility and ethical considerations. He noted that the urgency to publish information should never compromise accuracy and credibility, urging media professionals to prioritize verification before sharing news.

He reiterated that PIB serves as a trustworthy source of information, especially for civil service aspirants and professionals seeking reliable government data.

Guest of Honour Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar (IPS) discussed the district police’s anti-drug initiative, labeling drug abuse as a significant social issue. He stressed that the campaign's success relies on collective efforts and encouraged the media to actively participate in raising awareness, particularly among the youth. He also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the police to enhance law and order in the district.

The workshop began with a welcome address from PIB Shimla Assistant Director Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, who outlined the goals of the ‘Vartalap’ initiative and emphasized the importance of close collaboration between government entities and the media to ensure the timely dissemination of factual and reliable information. He also presented a memento to the Chief Guest.

The event included several technical sessions led by experts on topics of public significance.

Professor Varun Dutt from IIT Mandi provided an enlightening presentation on the challenges of fake news in the digital age, discussing practical methods for identifying misinformation, the importance of fact-checking, and the role of media professionals in maintaining public trust.

Ajay Badrel, District Programme Officer (ICDS), shared insights on key Central and State Government schemes focused on women’s empowerment and child welfare, along with the district's accomplishments in implementing these initiatives.

Pooja Gautam, a Subject Matter Specialist with the Department of Horticulture, elaborated on the sector’s contribution to Himachal Pradesh’s economy and discussed government initiatives and technological advancements aimed at benefiting farmers and orchardists.

In another technical session, Praveen Bhardwaj, who oversees the Emergency Operations Centre under the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), spoke about disaster preparedness, risk reduction strategies, emergency response mechanisms, and innovations in disaster management in hilly areas.

Renowned Pahari miniature artist Rajesh Kumar showcased Mandi’s rich cultural heritage and shared insights into the history, significance, and preservation of the traditional Kalam Chitrakari art form.

The workshop concluded with a formal vote of thanks from Sunil Kumar, In-charge of the Central Bureau of Communication, Mandi, who expressed appreciation to the dignitaries, speakers, media representatives, and participants for their contributions to the event's success.
