The upcoming municipal elections in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, have evolved from a routine local contest into a politically charged event. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's active involvement in the campaign signifies the importance the ruling Congress party places on this election, turning it into a contest of political prestige against the opposition BJP.

On Tuesday, the Chief Minister's rigorous campaign schedule included public engagements at various locations such as Skodi Bridge Parking, Tarna Mohalla, Bipasha Sadan, and Nela. Accompanied by State Party President Viney Kumar and Himachal Incharge Rajni Patil, Sukhu's presence underscores the Congress's strategic approach, which goes beyond merely winning wards to conveying a broader political message ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Interestingly, the Congress's tactics seem to echo those of former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who had a significant grassroots presence during the last Municipal Corporation elections. His extensive campaigning in Mandi was credited with the BJP's success in securing 11 out of 15 seats.

In response, Congress is keen to replicate this successful model. The party has assigned eight MLAs along with various board chairpersons and vice-chairpersons as election in-charges across Mandi's wards. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh has also been actively campaigning, spending two days in Mandi last week and continuing an intensive four-day schedule this week.

This substantial mobilization of senior Congress leaders reflects a serious organizational commitment, raising the question: Is the Mandi Municipal Corporation election a critical test for the ruling Congress government?

Political analysts increasingly believe it is. Mandi holds significant symbolic and strategic value in Himachal politics, particularly as it is seen as the stronghold of Jai Ram Thakur. A strong showing by Congress in this area could suggest a shift in public sentiment, despite ongoing criticisms regarding economic challenges and governance.

The Congress leadership is acutely aware of the political discomfort stemming from allegations of financial mismanagement and instability directed at the Sukhu administration by the BJP. In this context, victories—even at the municipal level—are viewed as crucial for maintaining political momentum.

This may explain why the Congress high command is taking the Mandi elections very seriously. By deploying the Chief Minister and mobilizing senior leaders for ward-level campaigning, Congress aims to project confidence and organizational unity while challenging the BJP's narrative in Thakur's home district.

For the BJP, maintaining its influence in Mandi is equally vital. A loss in this area would spark political discussions that extend beyond local governance.
