Traffic Management Issues Amidst Tourist Influx

MANDI:
The winter tourism season in Manali is experiencing an extraordinary influx of visitors, leading to significant economic benefits but also serious traffic management issues. The heavy flow of tourists during peak snowfall weeks has resulted in frequent and lengthy traffic jams, especially on the route between Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel (Rohtang), causing disruptions for local residents, emergency services, and daily commuters.
Official reports indicate that this winter, Manali has seen a 30 to 40 percent rise in tourist numbers compared to the previous year. On busy weekends and holidays, the Atal Tunnel has recorded over 20,000 vehicles in a single day, far surpassing the road's capacity under snowy conditions. This surge is attributed to consistent snowfall, extended holiday periods, and Manali's increasing appeal as a winter getaway.
The resulting congestion has led to traffic jams stretching several kilometers, sometimes lasting for hours. Locals have reported delays in medical emergencies and essential deliveries, while tourists have faced long waits in freezing temperatures.
In light of these challenges, Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana has instructed senior police officials from Lahaul-Spiti and Manali to collaborate closely to manage traffic flow. There is a strong focus on ensuring that emergency vehicles and local commuters can pass through without interruption, even during peak tourist times.
To enhance conditions on the ground, continuous police patrols have been established along the Solang-Atal Tunnel route. Strict enforcement of traffic regulations is underway, with tourists who violate lane discipline, parking rules, or speed limits facing immediate penalties. Authorities have also raised alarms about the increasing number of accidents within the Atal Tunnel, primarily due to speeding and reckless driving on slippery roads.
In response, measures have been taken to reinforce safety barriers, improve signage, and enhance traffic control systems in and around the tunnel, with police personnel remaining vigilant to address any incidents promptly.
While winter tourism is significantly boosting Manali's economy, benefiting hoteliers, transport services, adventure sports providers, and local businesses, it underscores the pressing need for responsible tourism practices. The administration has urged visitors to adhere strictly to traffic advisories, avoid unnecessary stops on narrow roads, and cooperate with law enforcement.
MLA Anuradha Rana has stressed that sustainable traffic management cannot rely solely on enforcement but requires active participation from tourists and the public. She expressed optimism that collective responsibility and compliance with regulations would help maintain Manali's status as a safe, accessible, and enjoyable winter destination.
