Belagavi (Karnataka), May 5: A man has been taken into custody after allegedly stabbing his mother-in-law during a heated argument over not being able to see his newborn child via video call, according to police reports on Tuesday.
Details of the Attack
This alarming incident occurred in Aladakatti village, located near Savadatti in the Belagavi district of Karnataka. The victim, identified as Mahadevi, is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment in the ICU at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS).
The accused, named Aravind Gavali, has been arrested following the attack. After the incident, he reportedly posted a threatening message on WhatsApp, stating, “Today jail, tomorrow bail… I won’t spare you.”
Background of the Conflict
According to police, Aravind's wife had given birth two months prior and was staying at her parents' home. He had been allegedly harassing her mentally and frequently demanded video calls to see their child. On the day of the incident, Mahadevi advised him to limit the calls, which led to an escalation of anger from Aravind.
When Mahadevi warned him against visiting her home, he reportedly forced his way inside, attacked her with a knife, and fled the scene.
Ongoing Investigations
Mahadevi was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care following the attack. The police are currently conducting further investigations into the matter.
This incident is reminiscent of previous violent cases in the region, including the murder of Lakshmi Devi in August 2025, where her son-in-law was arrested for the brutal crime.
