Arrest in Defence Colony Extortion Case

The Delhi Police have apprehended a 42-year-old man for allegedly extorting money from an elderly woman by posing as a municipal officer in the Defence Colony area of the national capital.

A senior police official provided this information on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan stated that the accused, identified as Tausif Raja, visited the complainant's residence on May 9, claiming to be an official from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). He asserted that the woman's house drainage was clogged, which would result in a fine of ₹50,000.

According to Chauhan, Raja threatened to cut off the electricity supply and disrupt the woman's son's wedding unless she paid him ₹25,000, which she reluctantly handed over out of fear.

On May 13, Raja returned and demanded ₹50 lakh from the woman, once again threatening to interfere with the wedding plans. The complainant's husband ended up giving the accused ₹1.5 lakh in cash near the Modi Mill flyover.

Despite receiving money, Raja continued to harass the family for more funds, prompting the woman to file a complaint at the Defence Colony police station.

Chauhan noted that the police tracked down the suspect in the Okhla area after analyzing mobile call records and footage from over 100 CCTV cameras. During interrogation, Raja reportedly confessed to his crimes.

The police seized a motorcycle, the mobile phone used in the crime, and ₹28,500 in cash from the accused. Raja, who has completed his graduation, previously worked as a property agent in the Shaheen Bagh area and had been arrested in 2018 for a fraud case registered at the IP Estate police station.
