Mamata Banerjee Rejects Waqf Amendment Act Amidst Protests in West Bengal
Chief Minister's Stance on the Waqf Amendment Act
Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Saturday that the Waqf (Amendment) Act will not be enforced in West Bengal, amidst escalating protests across the state.
Banerjee emphasized that the legislation was enacted by the central government, and thus, accountability lies with them.
In a message posted on X, she urged individuals of all faiths to remain calm and avoid any actions that could lead to unrest. "Every human life is valuable; do not provoke riots for political motives. Those inciting violence are damaging society," she stated.
The protests on Friday resulted in significant unrest in districts such as Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly, where vehicles, including police vans, were set ablaze, stones were thrown at law enforcement, and roads were obstructed.
Banerjee reiterated, "We did not create the law that has sparked this agitation. The central government is responsible for it, and they should be the ones to answer your concerns."
She further clarified, "Our position is clear — we do not endorse this law, and it will not be enacted in our state. So, what is the basis for the riots?"
The Chief Minister also warned that legal measures would be taken against those instigating violence.
"We will not tolerate any form of violence. Certain political factions are attempting to exploit religion for their own benefit. Do not succumb to their influence," she cautioned.
"Religion should embody humanity, kindness, civilization, and harmony. I urge everyone to uphold peace and unity," she concluded.
