Mamata Banerjee's Allegations Against BJP

On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), sent a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, accusing the BJP of plotting to undermine democratic rights in the state ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. In her post, she expressed deep concern over a serious conspiracy against the democratic rights of the people of Bengal. She claimed that BJP agents were caught red-handed attempting to include non-residents and outsiders in Bengal's voter list by submitting thousands of fraudulent Form 6 applications to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. This, she argued, is an attempt at voter hijacking, similar to the tactics successfully employed by the BJP in Maharashtra and Delhi.

Banerjee pointed out delays in processing genuine voter applications, stating, “While over 6 million legitimate voter applications are still pending, and more than 200 lives have been lost due to the flawed SIR process, the Election Commission is suspiciously rushing to act on these fraudulent applications behind closed doors. This is not only illegal and against the orders of the honorable Supreme Court, but it also represents a direct assault on free and fair elections in Bengal.”

Call for Action from the Election Commission

Demanding immediate action from the Election Commission, she stated, "I have urged the Commission to halt this undemocratic process, strictly adhere to the directives of the honorable Supreme Court, and ensure that no fraudulent voters are included after the final voter list is published on February 28, 2026. Bengal will not allow its democracy to be stolen in broad daylight. The people of Bengal are watching." In her letter, Banerjee noted that they are witnessing yet another planned attempt by the BJP to interfere with the democratic rights of the public in collaboration with the Election Commission.

Reliable reports suggest that BJP agents are submitting a large number of Form 6 applications to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer and in various districts. These applications do not appear to be standard requests for voter registration but rather seem to be a malicious scheme to include non-residents in the voter list.

Concerns Over Legitimacy of Applications

In her letter, she expressed serious concerns that these applications might be linked to individuals who are not actual residents of Bengal and have no legitimate ties to the state. Similar incidents have been observed in Bihar, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi prior to elections. She further wrote, "If these claims are true, they would be illegal, unconstitutional, and fundamentally undemocratic, reflecting malicious intent and bad faith. This does not meet the standards expected from a constitutional authority. The public has the right to transparency and the protection of their voting rights."
