Mamata Banerjee Launches Community Outreach in Bhabanipur Ahead of Elections
Mamata Banerjee's Community Engagement in Bhabanipur
On April 8, following her nomination submission, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conducted her first community outreach event in the Bhabanipur constituency on Sunday. During this event, she accused the BJP of allegedly removing names from the voter list and attempting to divide people along religious and caste lines.
The gathering took place at Ladies Park in the constituency, where Banerjee characterized the elections as a celebration of democracy rather than a display of tyranny. She urged individuals from various communities to unite ahead of the assembly elections.
The Bhabanipur assembly election has emerged as one of the most talked-about contests for 2026, featuring a direct face-off between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has served as an MLA three times from this seat, and opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari. The significance of this contest has increased, drawing parallels to the 2021 Nandigram election, where Adhikari, after leaving the Trinamool Congress for the BJP, defeated Banerjee.
While addressing a community dialogue event, Banerjee alleged that during a special intensive review process, many voters from minority and migrant communities had their names removed from the voter list. Speaking to a gathering of Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Sindhis, and members of the ISKCON community, she emphasized that elections are a festival of democracy, not of dictatorship.
She appealed to attendees to spread her message within their communities and maintain social unity. Banerjee claimed that approximately 300 nuns were found missing from the voter list during the review process.
