Kolkata, Nov 7: On Saturday, former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, indicated her intention to approach the Supreme Court following clashes involving supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and her party, the All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC), near her nephew Abhishek Banerjee's residence in south Kolkata.

Mamata accused both the BJP and local police of conspiring to incite unrest in the area. She visited Abhishek's home in Kalighat, which is in proximity to her own, and addressed the media.

Abhishek serves as the Lok Sabha member for Diamond Harbour representing the Trinamool Congress. Mamata expressed her willingness to escalate the issue to the highest judicial authority if necessary, claiming that law enforcement failed to intervene during the altercation. Both residences are situated in the same neighborhood.

“A group of unruly individuals, allegedly supported by the BJP, attacked Abhishek’s residence after 2 a.m., while the police stood by without taking action,” she claimed.

She specifically pointed out Bolai Bag, the officer-in-charge of the Kalighat police station, which oversees both homes, warning him that his inaction could provoke public outrage.

Mamata further accused the police of attempting to disrupt the annual Kali Puja festivities at her residence and obstructing visitors from attending the celebrations. She alleged that police presence and restrictions had heightened tensions in the area leading up to the festival.

“An atmosphere of unrest has been intentionally fostered in this locality prior to the Kali Puja. Traditional pujas are being hindered, while new ones are being initiated overnight. Access to my home has been nearly blocked, and police vehicles are deliberately obstructing the entrance. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, have also been issued,” she stated.

Mamata asserted that surveillance had increased to prevent gatherings outside her home.

“Consequently, the police have heightened monitoring to ensure no assembly occurs in front of my residence. This is all aimed at stopping people from visiting during the Kali Puja,” she remarked.

She accused the BJP of instigating the unrest outside Abhishek’s home early Saturday morning and questioned the party's commitment to democratic principles.

“While they are conducting ‘Save Democracy, Eliminate Anarchy’ rallies in the state, they are simultaneously undermining the democratic framework,” she stated.

Mamata also took aim at the state administration, indirectly referencing Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

“I do not hold all BJP members accountable. However, the individual leading the administration in West Bengal is responsible for these actions,” she concluded.
