Mamata Banerjee Appears in Supreme Court Amid Voter List Controversy

Chief Minister's Court Appearance

In the midst of ongoing disputes regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, where the court is set to hear the case today. She departed from the residence of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee this morning to attend the hearing. Additionally, significant security measures were implemented at the Supreme Court ahead of the proceedings.

Supreme Court's Directives

Previously, the Supreme Court instructed the Election Commission of India to publish the names of voters classified under the "logical discrepancies" category during the special intensive revision of the voter list in Tamil Nadu.

Hearing on Procedural Irregularities

The bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud issued these directives while hearing a series of petitions challenging the SIR process based on procedural irregularities in Tamil Nadu. The court mandated that these names be displayed at village panchayat offices, taluka offices in each subdivision, and ward offices in urban areas. Individuals whose names appear on the list can submit documents either personally or through authorized representatives within ten days from the date of display.

Allegations Against Election Commission

Concerns regarding discrepancies in the list must also be briefly explained. The Supreme Court directed all district collectors to ensure compliance with the Election Commission's directives and to deploy sufficient personnel for the smooth operation of the SIR process. Mamata Banerjee met with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, party MP Kalyan Banerjee, and others in New Delhi on Monday.

TMC Leader's Conduct

Sources indicated that despite the courteous demeanor of the Chief Election Commissioner and both election commissioners, the TMC leader made "false accusations, behaved inappropriately, slammed her hand on the table, and left abruptly." One source noted, "The Chief Election Commissioner responded to her questions and clarified that the rule of law would prevail, and any individual taking the law into their own hands would be dealt with strictly according to the provisions of the law and the powers granted to the commission."
