Maldives Implements Immigration Ban on Israeli Passport Holders Amid Gaza Conflict
Maldives Takes a Stand on Immigration Policy
In a significant policy shift, the Maldives has enacted a new immigration regulation that prohibits entry to individuals holding Israeli passports, a decision influenced by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This amendment was approved by the Parliament on Monday and subsequently endorsed by President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday, as per an official announcement from the presidential office.
It remains uncertain if this law will extend to individuals with dual nationality, specifically those possessing both Israeli and another country's passport.
The Cabinet had initially decided on this measure nearly a year ago, but it was only formalized this week.
The official statement emphasized that this ratification demonstrates the government's resolute position against the ongoing violence and alleged genocide perpetrated by Israel against Palestinians.
The Maldives, a small island nation located south of India, is renowned for its luxury tourism and is predominantly a Sunni Muslim country where the practice of other religions is legally restricted.
Recent immigration data indicated that 59 Israeli passport holders visited the Maldives in February.
