Malayalam Film Community Protests Against CBFC Censorship of 'Janaki vs State of Kerala'
Protest by Malayalam Film Industry
On Monday, members of the Malayalam cinema and television industry, represented by AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Actors), the Producers Association, and FEFKA (Film Employees Federation of Kerala), organized a protest against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This demonstration took place outside the CBFC's regional office located at the Chitranjali Studio complex in Thiruvallam, Thiruvananthapuram. The protest was in support of the film 'Janaki vs State of Kerala,' which is currently under scrutiny due to its title. Initially set for release on June 20, the film's debut has been delayed to June 27, and further postponed due to ongoing censorship issues.
Censorship Issues Surrounding the Film
The film, featuring Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi, has encountered obstacles after the CBFC requested a title change. The board raised concerns about the name 'Janaki,' which is also associated with the Hindu goddess Sita. In Hindu tradition, Sita is known by various names, including 'Janaki.'
Directed by Pravin Narayanan, 'Janaki vs State of Kerala' is a courtroom drama that tells the story of a woman named Janaki who embarks on a legal battle against the state following a traumatic incident. Suresh Gopi portrays the senior advocate representing Janaki in court.
The CBFC reportedly stated that a woman's name associated with a deity should not be used in the context of an assault.
Support from the Film Fraternity
B Unnikrishnan, President of FEFKA, expressed that the censorship should be opposed collectively, urging Suresh Gopi to leverage his position as a minister to advocate for artistic freedom. He described the censorship as unjust and an infringement on creative expression.
Unnikrishnan emphasized, "This issue should concern not just artists but everyone who values the diversity and culture of our country. Suresh Gopi, now a minister, should reflect on how his government addresses cinema and creativity."
He further noted that there is uncertainty regarding the CBFC's stance on the film, particularly about the protagonist's name, Janaki, which the board wishes to change due to its connotations.
He criticized the CBFC's decision as 'disturbing' and 'arbitrary,' asserting that the film does not contain any religious references, according to its director. Unnikrishnan stated, "We are trying to understand the CBFC's position and expect them to provide clarification in the High Court soon. Based on that, we will determine our next steps."
Legal Action Taken by Producers
In light of the CBFC's unofficial directive, the producers of 'Janaki vs State of Kerala' have approached the Kerala High Court for resolution. As of now, Union Minister Suresh Gopi has not publicly commented on the situation.
