Jorhat, Apr 25: The esteemed art of mask-making from Majuli is poised to receive international acclaim, as masks produced at the historic Samaguri Satra are set to be shipped to the United States.
Majuli is synonymous with the rich heritage of mask-making, with Samaguri Satra being a prominent representative of this unique craft.
This tradition, deeply rooted in the teachings of Srimanta Sankardeva, has played a significant role in showcasing Majuli’s cultural richness to the global audience.
When discussing the mask art of Samaguri Satra, one cannot overlook the contributions of the esteemed mask artist, Hem Chandra Goswami.
Under his expert guidance, the masks destined for the United States have been meticulously crafted. His previous works have also found their way to various regions across India and beyond.
“This traditional art form has been receiving international recognition. Masks from Majuli are even housed in the British Museum. With another collection from Samaguri Satra heading to the United States, it brings immense pride to the people of Assam,” remarked Goswami.
He further explained that the order was placed by a client in the United States, with the masks being designed to meet specific criteria.
“They provided us with sketches detailing their desired mask designs, and our students worked diligently to create them. We are thrilled to have this chance to present our culture on a global stage,” he added.
