Major Wildlife Trafficking and Drug Syndicate Uncovered in Gujarat
Crackdown on Illegal Activities
In a significant operation, the crime branch of Gujarat, along with the forest department, raided a residential flat in Navrangpura, uncovering a major international wildlife trafficking and drug syndicate. Inside a cramped 10×12 feet room, authorities found over 50 exotic snakes and rare animals, which were allegedly being used for venom extraction and supplying drugs at high-profile rave parties.
The investigation revealed that the gang was not only involved in animal trafficking but was also trading in their venom. There was a high demand for snake venom at secret rave parties in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Kheda, with a single dose fetching up to ₹50,000. Enthusiasts would either allow themselves to be bitten by the snakes or inject the venom directly into their bloodstream. The rates for bites varied depending on the species of the snake.
Flat Turned into a Foreign Zoo
The police have arrested the main suspect, Manikandan Nadar (41), during the raid. Not only snakes were found, but also several animals brought from rare corners of the world. The haul included 50 different species of venomous snakes, red-handed tamarin monkeys, African grey parrots, blue-and-yellow macaws, Persian cats, and dwarf rabbits from the Netherlands.
Organized Gang with Pharma Connections
Investigators suspect that this is an interstate gang linked to Chennai and other ports. There are concerns that these animals were smuggled into India through customs violations. Sources indicate that some snakes were also illegally sold to pharmaceutical companies, while their venom was supplied to drug syndicates.
Multiple Agencies Involved in Investigation
Given the seriousness of the case, several agencies have joined forces for the investigation. The forest department is looking into violations of wildlife protection laws. The customs department is exploring illegal import-export routes for foreign species. Meanwhile, the municipal corporation (AMC) is assessing the health risks posed by these animals in densely populated areas, and the cyber cell is examining the suspect's digital devices and bank records to compile a list of clients.
