Major Success in Odisha's Anti-Naxal Operations: Four Rebels Killed
Significant Achievement in Naxal Operations
In Odisha, the ongoing anti-Naxal campaign has achieved a significant milestone as security forces reported a major success on Thursday. During an encounter in Kandhamal district, four Naxalites, including Ganesh Uike, a central committee member and head of operations for the CPI (Maoist), were killed. This brings the total number of Naxal casualties in the past three days to six.
Details of the Encounter
The encounter took place in the Ganjam-Kandhamal border area after security forces received credible intelligence regarding the presence of Naxalites. A joint team comprising the Special Operations Group, CRPF, BSF, and Kandhamal police initiated a search operation in the region. Gunfire erupted intermittently in various locations on Thursday morning, resulting in the deaths of four Naxalites.
Profile of the Deceased Naxalites
Among those killed was 69-year-old Ganesh Uike, a resident of Nalgonda district in Telangana, who was considered a significant figure within the organization. Police officials stated that he was an active member of the CPI (Maoist) central committee and was overseeing the group's activities in Odisha.
Impact on Maoist Operations
According to Odisha's Director General of Police, Y.B. Khurania, the operation resulted in the recovery of two INSAS rifles and one .303 rifle. He emphasized that this operation dealt a substantial blow to the Maoist organization, significantly weakening their presence in the state.
Ongoing Efforts Against Maoism
Over the past three years, security forces, with the assistance of intelligence agencies, have consistently targeted Maoist leadership. Once comprising 21 central committee members, the organization has now dwindled to fewer than five. The group is also facing serious challenges in recruiting new cadres.
Recent Encounters and Future Operations
Earlier on Wednesday, another encounter occurred in the Belghar police station area of Kandhamal district, resulting in the deaths of two more Naxalites. Officials have reported no casualties among security personnel so far.
Government's Commitment to Eradicate Naxalism
Home Minister Amit Shah hailed this operation as a significant achievement in the fight against Naxalism, asserting that the country will be completely free of Naxalism by March 31, 2026. He described this as a crucial step towards a 'Naxal-free India.'
Continued Search Operations
Search operations in the area are ongoing, with security agencies expressing concerns that some Naxalites may still be hiding in the forests.
