Significant Departure from AAP

On Friday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a significant setback when three of its Rajya Sabha members, including Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal, defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during an event at the party's headquarters in Delhi, attended by Nitin Nabeen. Earlier in the day, Raghav Chadha, alongside Pathak and Mittal, announced in a press conference that two-thirds of AAP's Rajya Sabha members had left the party to join the BJP as a faction. He also mentioned that fellow MPs Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal would be departing from AAP as well.

Impact of the Defection

Under Raghav Chadha's leadership, seven out of ten AAP MPs have officially merged with the BJP. This move fulfills the requirement of a two-thirds majority under the Tenth Schedule, allowing them to avoid disqualification. This coordinated and decisive shift has increased the BJP's strength from 106 to 113 seats. Consequently, the Rajya Sabha, which has often delayed or debated government bills, now appears less resistant than before.

Strengthening BJP's Position

The merger significantly bolsters the BJP's position in the upper house, bringing it closer to a functional majority, which may facilitate the passage of contentious legislation. For the Aam Aadmi Party, this represents a major blow; not only has it lost seats, but it has also lost key figures in its national expansion efforts. Chadha's farewell statement—"I was the right person in the wrong party"—suggests a complete rejection of the AAP's 'common man' brand in favor of the BJP's 'nationalist' perspective.
