Arrest of TMC Leader Jahangir Khan

Significant news is emerging from West Bengal's political landscape. The Special Task Force (STF) of the state police has apprehended prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan, who had been evading capture for several days. According to police sources, Khan was arrested early this morning near the India-Nepal border. The STF had been closely monitoring his activities based on intelligence reports.

Authorities revealed that there are seven separate FIRs filed against Jahangir Khan at the Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district, with multiple serious criminal charges leading to a prolonged search for him.

Calcutta High Court Revokes Interim Protection

The Calcutta High Court recently revoked the interim protection granted to Khan against strict police action concerning various criminal cases. Initially, on May 18, the court had provided him relief, but this was later annulled. The judges stated that it was inappropriate to maintain such protection solely based on changing political circumstances in the state and claims of political vendetta by the petitioner.

Khan's lawyer, Kishore Dutta, argued in court that numerous criminal cases were filed against his client following the assembly election results on May 4. He contended that these cases stemmed from political retribution and emphasized that the security was essential not only for the electoral process but also to protect Khan from alleged harassment.

Opposition to Security Enhancement

On the other hand, Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Majumdar opposed the request for increased security. He pointed out that the previously granted protection was solely to enable Khan to participate in the re-polling in Falta on May 21, with results announced on May 24.

Khan Withdraws from Falta By-Election

In a significant political turn during the re-polling for the Falta assembly seat in South 24 Parganas, Jahangir Khan has withdrawn his nomination, delivering a considerable setback to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Khan stated that his decision to withdraw was made in the interest of the people of Falta. He expressed, "I am a son of Falta and wish for peace and progress in the area. Our Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is providing a special package for the development of Falta, which is why I have decided to distance myself from the re-polling process in this region."
