Major Gas Leak in Sivasagar Sparks Panic Among Residents
Gas Leak Incident in Sivasagar District
Sivasagar, June 12: A significant gas leak occurred in the Bhatiapar Barichuk region of Sivasagar district on Thursday, causing widespread panic among locals due to a pipeline rupture at a drilling site.
In response to the emergency, three fire engines from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) have been dispatched to the location. Firefighters are actively spraying water to mitigate the risk of a fire igniting.
Senior officials from ONGC, along with personnel from Joysagar Police, are present at the scene, overseeing the situation and coordinating the emergency response.
The leak, which is ongoing and under high pressure, has created a dangerous environment, forcing residents to evacuate their homes in search of safety.
A local resident shared, “We heard a loud noise and rushed outside. Gas was spewing from the pipe, and without a second thought, we ran for our lives.”
The drilling operation was being conducted by a private firm, SK Petrol. The incident transpired while the company was in the process of installing a new pipeline at oil well number RD-S147, situated at drilling site SKP-135. An explosion during the installation led to the pipeline burst and a significant gas release.
Another resident recounted, “The sound was deafening. We were terrified. After the blast, oil splattered all over our tin roof. It’s been about 20 days since the drilling started.”
As the gas leak persists, authorities are increasingly concerned about the potential for a larger disaster if the situation is not swiftly addressed.
