Industrial Accident in Port Arthur
On Monday evening, a significant industrial accident occurred at the Valero Refinery located in Port Arthur, Texas. A powerful explosion rocked the facility, resulting in towering flames and thick black smoke enveloping the area. In response to the incident, local authorities issued an emergency 'shelter-in-place' order for residents to stay indoors for safety.
According to reports, the explosion was heard around 6:30 PM, with tremors felt in nearby areas including Port Arthur, Groves, and Nederland. The fire broke out at Valero Energy's refinery, which has a processing capacity of 380,000 barrels per day, making it one of the largest oil processing units in the United States. In light of the explosion, the city of Port Arthur has implemented 'shelter-in-place' orders for several areas, including Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, regions south of Highway 73, and areas west of Sterlwell Boulevard, to ensure public safety.

About Valero Port Arthur Refinery
The Valero Port Arthur Refinery is situated on the Texas Gulf Coast, approximately 90 miles east of Houston. It employs around 700 workers and has the capability to produce 435,000 barrels of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel daily from heavy sour crude oil. Crude oil is delivered to the refinery via rail, marine docks, and pipelines, while finished products are transported through pipelines and shipped out via the refinery's docks.
The refinery is adjacent to the Diamond Green Diesel (DGD) plant, which is set to increase its capacity to produce 1.2 billion gallons of renewable diesel and 50 million gallons of renewable naphtha annually. DGD is a joint venture between Valero Energy Corporation and Darling Ingredients Inc., focusing on renewable diesel production.
