Arrest of Key Suspect in Donation Theft

In a significant development regarding the alleged theft of donations at the renowned Badri Nath temple in Uttarakhand, the Chamoli police have made a crucial arrest. Late Sunday night, they apprehended the main suspect, Pramod Nautiyal, at his residence in Dehradun. According to officials, following his arrest, Nautiyal was transported to Badri Nath, where investigators are conducting thorough interrogations concerning the misappropriation of temple offerings and donations. Police officials aim to gather all necessary information and complete the questioning before presenting him in court on Monday.

FIR Filed After Internal Investigation

The police reported that an FIR against Nautiyal was lodged late Tuesday night. Prior to his suspension, he served as the personal assistant to the chairman of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC). This action was taken based on the findings of a four-member investigative committee established by the BKTC. Reports indicate that the committee found initial evidence supporting allegations of irregularities in the management and maintenance of temple donations, paving the way for further legal action.

State Government Orders Independent Inquiry

In addition to the internal investigation by the BKTC, the Uttarakhand government has initiated an independent inquiry into the matter. A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the allegations, chaired by the commissioner of the Garhwal division. This committee is tasked with completing the investigation and submitting its report and recommendations to the state government.

How the Controversy Emerged

The issue gained attention when allegations of discrepancies in the counting of donations at the Badri Nath temple surfaced on social media, prompting public scrutiny. Following these online claims, an organization named 'Bhairav Sena' filed a formal complaint, demanding a comprehensive investigation and the filing of an FIR. This complaint led to police action, prompting both the BKTC and the state government to commence their inquiries.
