Maharashtra's Vision for Gadchiroli: Balancing Development and Environmental Protection

Chief Minister's Commitment to Sustainable Development
Mumbai, June 12: The Maharashtra government is embarking on an ambitious initiative to transform Gadchiroli into India's next steel hub. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has emphasized the importance of safeguarding forests, stating that only necessary tree removal will occur under strict environmental regulations during the mining development process.
In a recent post on X, CM Fadnavis addressed concerns surrounding the Surjagad iron ore project, clarifying, “There has been significant discussion and misinformation regarding this project. I want to assure everyone that no permissions have been granted for uncontrolled tree cutting. Our approach is responsible and phased, ensuring environmental consciousness. The claim that '1 lakh trees will be cut' is unfounded and misleading.”
To maintain ecological balance, the Lloyd company is committed to planting 11 lakh trees as part of their responsibilities. Additionally, the State Government aims to plant 1 crore trees in Gadchiroli to enhance the region's green cover. Local eco-restoration and compensatory afforestation will be funded entirely by the Lloyd company. The Central Government has provisionally approved the use of 937.077 hectares of forest land for systematic mineral recovery, which will be executed in three distinct phases, with each phase contingent on the successful completion and review of the previous one.
CM Fadnavis outlined the phased plan: Phase 1 involves 500 hectares (300 hectares for infrastructure and 200 hectares for a tailing yard), Phase 2 will cover 200 hectares, and Phase 3 will encompass 237 hectares, all dependent on prior phase evaluations.
“Tree cutting will only be permitted when absolutely necessary, adhering to the principle of minimal deforestation. This initiative aims to foster development, create jobs, and enhance infrastructure in one of Maharashtra’s most promising districts while preserving ecological integrity. We are committed to ensuring that forest conservation and local development progress together,” he stated.
He further stressed the need for clarity and transparency, stating, "We must avoid confusion and misinformation.”
During his visit to Gadchiroli last week, CM Fadnavis remarked, “This district is a top priority on our development agenda. I have instructed all government departments to prioritize and expedite development projects. I have taken on the role of Guardian Minister to directly address the issues facing Gadchiroli. I am aware of the concerns raised by local representatives, and necessary policy decisions will be made accordingly.”
He concluded by stating that the government aims to enhance security, promote development, and generate employment in Gadchiroli while preserving its essence of “jal, jameen, jungle (water, land, forest).”
