Maharashtra Minister Calls for Uniform Dress Code in Corporate Sector
Demand for Standard Dress Code in Corporates
On Wednesday, Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane advocated for the implementation of a uniform dress code across the corporate sector following a controversy surrounding Lenskart's dress code policy. Drawing parallels with educational institutions, Rane stated that just as schools and colleges have regulations regarding the wearing of hijabs and burqas, similar rules should be established in corporate environments to maintain fairness in the workplace. He emphasized that such regulations should not be selectively enforced.
Equality in Religious Practices
Rane expressed to reporters that while they respect faith, it raises questions when hijabs and burqas are permitted in the corporate world, but tilaks are not. He argued that if practices from one religion are restricted, then similar treatment should be applied to others. The ongoing debate about allowing hijabs and burqas in schools and colleges should also extend to the corporate sector to ensure impartiality, he insisted.
Response to Lenskart's Dress Code Controversy
These remarks from Rane came after Lenskart's internal dress code guidelines went viral on social media, sparking controversy. The eyewear retailer faced backlash for not allowing bindi and tilak for its store employees. In response, Lenskart issued a standardized style guide, affirming its commitment to welcoming symbols of faith and culture.
Lenskart's Apology and Commitment
The Lenskart team also apologized for any potential offense caused to team members regarding workplace communication. They stated that if any form of communication at their workplace has hurt any team member or made them feel unwelcome regarding their beliefs, they deeply regret it. Lenskart clarified that this is not their ethos, nor will it ever be. They committed to ensuring that every policy, training material, and communication published under the Lenskart name reflects these values.
