Significant Announcement for Beneficiaries

The Maharashtra government has made a notable announcement regarding the 'Chief Minister Majhi Ladli Bahna Yojana.' On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, set for January 14, the government plans to deposit ₹3,000 into the bank accounts of eligible women. This amount combines two pending installments from December and January. However, the timing of this payment, occurring just a day before the municipal elections, has sparked considerable political controversy in the state.

Gift for Makar Sankranti or Election Strategy?

According to the government’s plan, the two installments of ₹1,500 each for December and January will be transferred simultaneously. The administration argues that this financial assistance is intended to support women during the festive season. Nevertheless, the opposition has raised concerns about the timing of the payments.

Congress Files Complaint with Election Commission

The Congress party has formally approached the Election Commission, arguing that disbursing funds on the eve of voting constitutes a clear violation of electoral regulations. With voting scheduled for January 15, the party contends that depositing money into the accounts of female beneficiaries just before the election could influence voter behavior. Congress claims that nearly one crore women are set to receive these payments and describes this action as a form of 'government bribery.'

The party clarified that it does not oppose the Ladli Bahna Yojana but insists that the installments should be credited only after the elections are concluded. In response to the complaint, the Election Commission has requested the Maharashtra Chief Secretary to clarify the government's stance by 11 AM today.

BJP Responds to Allegations

In response to the accusations, the BJP has labeled Congress as 'anti-women' for objecting to the installment payments. The ruling party emphasized that assistance under the Ladli Bahna Yojana should not be hindered for political reasons.

Major Challenge Before BMC Elections

Makar Sankranti falls on January 14, with crucial voting for the BMC elections taking place the following day. The results are expected to be announced on January 16. Congress fears that transferring funds just before the election could sway a significant portion of women's votes towards the BJP. The BMC elections hold substantial political significance in Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai, as winning them not only enhances political influence but also grants extensive administrative power and financial control. All major parties are focusing their efforts on these elections.
