Government's Response to Acquittal

Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, announced on Saturday that the state will challenge the acquittal in the double murder case involving Pawanraje Nimbalkar. According to Shinde, he and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have consulted with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file an appeal regarding this case. Shinde informed a news agency that both he and Fadnavis have spoken with Amit Shah, who confirmed that the CBI will contest the decision in the High Court.

Reaction to the Court's Decision

Expressing his disappointment over the ruling, Shinde stated that both he and the Nimbalkar family had previously believed that justice would be served. He described the incident as tragic, noting that Pawanraje Nimbalkar and two others were murdered in broad daylight. This case was of significant concern, and many, including the family, were hopeful for a conviction. Unfortunately, the CBI court has acquitted the accused due to lack of evidence. Today, all nine defendants in the 2006 double murder case were cleared of charges by a CBI court.

Details of the Case

The murders of Pawanraje Nimbalkar and his driver, Samad Kazi, occurred in June 2006 in the Kalamboli area of Navi Mumbai. The CBI later took over the investigation, which dragged on for several years in court. Among those acquitted was former NCP leader Padamsingh Patil, one of the main accused in the case. A total of nine individuals were arrested in connection with these murders, and a chargesheet was filed against them.

Family Connections

Pawanraje Nimbalkar is the father of Omraje Nimbalkar, one of the six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs who rebelled against the party. There are speculations that these leaders may join the faction led by Eknath Shinde.

Court Proceedings

After the completion of debates and evidence examination, the CBI's special court acquitted all the accused. UBT MP Omraje Nimbalkar was also present in court alongside family members.
