Maharashtra Government Forms Special Team to Investigate Birth and Death Registration Anomalies
Investigation Launched into Registration Irregularities
Officials have announced that the Maharashtra government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe alleged discrepancies in the Civil Registration System (CRS) software. This decision follows the alarming revelation that approximately 27,000 birth and death registrations were recorded in a village with a population of only 1,300.
The figures indicate a significant mismatch with the village's demographic data, raising serious concerns about potential misuse, manipulation, or fraudulent activities associated with the digital registration platform.
An official reported on Monday that preliminary findings revealed an unusual and troubling imbalance in the registration data. In December, it was noted that the village recorded 27,398 'delayed birth registrations' within just three months.
A criminal case has been filed at the Yavatmal city police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
Currently, the investigation is being led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Yavatmal. Given the seriousness of the situation and its potential implications, the Home Department has decided to conduct a thorough investigation through the SIT, overseen by the Additional Director General (ADG) of Maharashtra Cyber.
SIT to Conduct On-Site Verification
The SIT includes the Deputy Director of Health Services and the District Health Officer as members. Officials stated that the team plans to visit the village council this weekend to verify the situation on-site, examine the processes, and identify any systemic or procedural flaws that may have been exploited.
During a recent meeting, key observations were recorded, and supervisory instructions were issued to ensure strict compliance throughout the investigation.
