Maharashtra Congress Leader Calls for Impeachment of State Election Commission
Political Turmoil in Maharashtra Over Local Body Elections
Nana Patole, the former president of the Maharashtra Congress and a senior leader, has raised serious allegations against the ruling 'Mahayuti' coalition. He claims that the coalition is responsible for the postponement of local body elections due to alleged misconduct. Patole has challenged the State Election Commission (SEC) under Article 243, initiating impeachment proceedings against it. He warned that if the government fails to take action, the opposition is prepared to propose impeachment themselves.
The controversy erupted when the SEC announced the postponement of elections for 24 municipal councils and panchayats, originally scheduled for December 2, now delayed until December 20. This decision followed a court ruling on November 23 regarding appeals against the officials' orders. Patole accused the commission of irregularities and noted that even Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed surprise at the process, confirming long-standing concerns raised by Rahul Gandhi.
Patole urged for a special legislative session to present the impeachment motion, arguing that any official abusing power undermines democracy. He emphasized that if those in power do not act against the SEC, it indicates something is amiss. He pointed out the hidden motives behind the delays, allegedly prompting the ruling party to avoid unfavorable outcomes.
Furthermore, Patole dismissed claims from BJP election in-charge Chandrashekhar Bawankule regarding opposition politics, reiterating the demand for action in the winter session starting December 8. He stated that if the Mahayuti does not proceed, Congress will bring this proposal to the assembly, framing it as a patriotic duty to protect electoral integrity.
Opposition's Call for Democratic Balance
Bhaskar Jadhav, a legislator from Shiv Sena (UBT), has urged the Maharashtra legislature to appoint leaders of the opposition (LOP) for both the assembly and council before the winter session begins in Nagpur on December 8. He stressed that recognizing the opposition's equality is crucial for maintaining democratic balance and preventing government overreach.
