Maharashtra CM Highlights Battle Between Mamata Banerjee and the People in Upcoming Bengal Elections
Maharashtra CM's Perspective on Bengal Elections
On Friday, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis characterized the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections as a contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the citizens. Expressing confidence in the BJP's victory, Fadnavis stated that the public has decided to embark on a 'new beginning' to realize the dream of 'Sonar Bangla'. He emphasized, 'This support indicates that change is imminent. This is not merely a BJP versus TMC battle; it is a fight between Mamata and the people of Bengal.' He criticized the TMC government, claiming that West Bengal, once among the top five states economically, is now drowning in debt due to a poor GSDP-to-debt ratio.
Fadnavis, a BJP leader, remarked, 'If we wish to shape the future of Bengal's youth today, it is essential to attract industries here. Bengal was once counted among the top five states in the country, but now it is entirely engulfed in debt. Currently, Bengal ranks first in the nation regarding the ratio of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to debt.' Fadnavis is in West Bengal to campaign for the BJP ahead of the elections.
As the campaign enters its final phase for the first round of elections, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister and president of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), has intensified her attacks against the BJP, which she labels as 'anti-Bengal'.
While campaigning for candidates in various constituencies of Cooch Behar district, CM Banerjee pledged to fight for the protection of Bengal, the rights of its people, and the preservation of its secular fabric.
She asserted, 'As long as I stand, I will not allow these 'anti-Bengal landlords' to inflict any pain or suffering on the people of this land. I will fight to safeguard Bengal, protect the rights of those I was elected to serve, secure the future of this beautiful state, and defend our secular fabric and inclusive spirit against any force that attempts to undermine it.' She shared this message along with a video from an election rally on social media, emphasizing her need for public support, as they have always stood by her. Reflecting on her long political journey, she noted her steadfast commitment to her ideology and mentioned that she has taken every step of this journey alongside the people. Voting in West Bengal will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results announced on May 4.
