Maharashtra CM Dismisses Speculations of NCP-Congress Merger
Fadnavis Responds to Merger Speculations
On Thursday, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis rejected rumors regarding a potential merger between Sharad Pawar's NCP faction and the Congress party. He asserted that if such a move were to occur, it would ultimately benefit the BJP. Addressing questions about the increasing discussions surrounding the NCP-Congress merger, Fadnavis took a jab at the opposition, likening the situation to an uninvited guest overly excited about someone else's wedding.
He further stated that while discussions about a possible merger may continue in political circles, there is no significant reason for the BJP to be concerned. Fadnavis remarked that although people talk about mergers, if it were to happen, it would only provide the BJP with more space. He criticized Congress, describing it as a sinking ship, and noted that no one boards a sinking vessel, hence the BJP is adopting a 'wait and watch' approach.
Opposition Unity Speculations Rise
Following Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut's suggestion that parties separated from Congress should reunite under its banner to effectively challenge the BJP, speculations about renewed opposition unity have intensified. In response to Raut's comments, Fadnavis remarked that Raut resembles someone overly enthusiastic at another's wedding. Regarding the merger, he stated that the leaders of these regional parties are politically astute and would not align themselves with a sinking ship like Congress. He emphasized that even if a merger were to occur, it would not harm the BJP, as it would create more political opportunities.
Earlier, Raut had suggested that leaders from Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, or Andhra Pradesh, who had left Congress to form their own parties, should return and start anew under the Congress flag. His statements have sparked a fresh political debate. NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule acknowledged Raut's suggestion as a good one, adding that only time will reveal what the future holds.
