Defending the Ethanol Blending Policy

Pune, August 9 – Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the ethanol blending policy on Sunday, asserting that the criticism it faces is based on insufficient evidence. Speaking in Kolhapur, Fadnavis stated, “Automobile manufacturers have told customers that if any issues arise from ethanol-blended petrol, they should provide proof, yet no one has come forward with such evidence.”

He emphasized that the production of ethanol has opened new avenues for sugar mills. Furthermore, he noted that several government decisions will ensure better resource utilization and reduce waste in the sugar industry.

Criticism from Political Opponents

Arvind Kejriwal, the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accused the government of hastily implementing the E20 policy without upgrading infrastructure or confirming whether existing vehicles are compatible with higher ethanol blends. In response, the central government defended its ethanol blending initiative, stating that extensive testing and practical experience have not revealed any evidence of unusual wear, corrosion, or reduced vehicle lifespan associated with E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol.
