Maharashtra Chief Minister Affirms Marathi as Sole Mandatory Language
Language Policy and Cultural Identity
In the midst of ongoing discussions surrounding language, identity, and governance, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reiterated that Marathi will remain the only compulsory language in the state. He assured citizens that no other language would be imposed upon them.
Fadnavis emphasized that Marathi is the sole mandatory language in Maharashtra, clarifying that the state government has no intention of enforcing any other language on its populace. His remarks came during a time of political and public discourse regarding language policy, education, and cultural identity. While the government presents this stance as a means to preserve Marathi pride and respect linguistic diversity, opposition parties, educators, and civil society groups continue to debate how such policies might affect minorities, social harmony, and everyday governance.
No Other Language Will Be Made Mandatory
The Chief Minister stated that Marathi will be the only compulsory language in the state's educational system, with no other Indian language being mandated. Decisions regarding the introduction of other languages will be made following the report from a committee led by Dr. Narendra Jadhav. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the 99th All India Marathi Literary Conference.
Fadnavis articulated that Marathi is not just a means of communication but also embodies the identity and spirit of Maharashtra, thus its mandatory status will be upheld. He clarified that the government does not oppose other Indian languages but has no plans to make them compulsory. A committee chaired by Dr. Narendra Jadhav has been established to create a balanced and practical language policy, and its report is currently in the final stages, which will guide future decisions.
Emphasis on the Preservation of Marathi
Speaking on Marathi literature and culture, the Chief Minister noted that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had elevated Marathi to an administrative language through the 'Rajyavyavhar Kosh'. The government remains fully committed to the preservation and promotion of Marathi. He expressed pride in the central government's recognition of Marathi as a prestigious language under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Furthermore, it is essential to spread Marathi to a wider audience and strengthen its presence in daily life. The establishment of Marathi study centers in national institutions is a significant step in this direction.
