Maharashtra ATS Takes Action Under UAPA

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra has invoked provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the stabbing incident at Meera Road. The defense team informed the Thane court that the accused, Zaib Zuber Ansari, suffers from schizophrenia. During a court appearance on Monday, ATS officials informed the judge that Section 16 of the UAPA, which pertains to punishment for terrorist acts, has been applied. Previously, the accused faced charges under the Indian Penal Code for attempted murder, causing grievous hurt with a weapon, and promoting enmity between religious groups.

Attack Following Religious Inquiry

According to investigators, Ansari allegedly attacked two security guards at a construction site in Nayanagar, Meera Road, last week. The police reported that he questioned the guards about their religion and asked them to recite the Kalma. When they failed to comply, he reportedly assaulted them with a knife.

Thorough Examination of Digital Evidence

Investigators are currently examining materials recovered from Ansari's residence and devices for potential links to extremist propaganda. Officials informed the court that his devices contained videos related to ISIS in Syria and similar content. The search history of his mobile phone and laptop is also under scrutiny. Further analysis of his messages and emails is being conducted by forensic laboratories to determine if he was influenced by or in contact with others.

ATS Seeks Extended Custody for Further Investigation

The ATS has requested further custody of the accused, stating that it is essential to confront him with the forensic data obtained from his devices. Investigators noted that Ansari deleted crucial data from his mobile phone before his arrest. A mirror image of the device has been secured for detailed analysis. The agency is also exploring whether he may have influenced others, as he had been conducting online classes for students from the UAE and other countries.
