Announcement of Uniform Civil Code Implementation

On Monday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh announced that the state will soon implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He encouraged citizens to share their opinions through a newly launched online consultation portal. In a statement to the media, Yadav mentioned that a six-member committee, chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge, will gather insights from religious leaders regarding the UCC's implementation in the state.

Call for Public Participation

Yadav emphasized the need to move towards the UCC, stating that there should be no room for religious, social, or familial disputes in today's society. He urged the public to contribute their suggestions on the website. The Chief Minister pointed out that issues related to divorce involving women, family traditions, and various religious practices should not lead to legal or social discrimination. He noted that states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat have already adopted frameworks for this code, and Madhya Pradesh is set to follow suit.

Committee's Role and Next Steps

The committee, led by retired Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai, is currently visiting different districts to collect suggestions from stakeholders across all communities. After compiling their findings, the committee will draft a bill for presentation. The state government is eager to implement the UCC as soon as possible. Yadav appealed to citizens, social groups, and religious organizations to actively participate in this process, highlighting that a dedicated website has been launched for public suggestions.
