Luis de la Fuente Optimistic About Yamal's Impact in World Cup Semi-Final
De la Fuente Supports Yamal for Key Moment
Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain, is confident that young talent Lamine Yamal has yet to showcase his pivotal moment at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He believes the forward has the potential to shine in the upcoming semi-final against France or, if Spain advances, in the final. Yamal recently celebrated his 19th birthday just before the crucial match at Dallas Stadium. De la Fuente encouraged the Barcelona player to embrace the occasion without feeling overwhelmed by expectations. "I've advised him to enjoy the moment. I am certain that Lamine's standout World Cup performance is on the horizon. I hope it happens tomorrow, or in the final if we make it there," De la Fuente shared with reporters.
Tactical Showdown Against France
Reflecting on last year's UEFA Nations League semi-final, where Spain triumphed over France 5-4, De la Fuente noted that both teams have evolved since then. "We learned a lot from that match, and they did too. We will aim to replicate the scenarios that worked in our favor," he stated. The coach characterized the semi-final as a clash of differing football philosophies and acknowledged the threat posed by France's star players, including Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise. "We have thoroughly analyzed them. They possess exceptional talent, but so do we. The key is to assert our style while neutralizing theirs. In football, the more balanced team often comes out on top, though it's not a guarantee," he added.
France's Impressive Knockout Run
France has had a perfect knockout stage, defeating Sweden, Paraguay, and Morocco without conceding a single goal. Coach Didier Deschamps is on the verge of becoming the manager with the most FIFA World Cup matches (26). Despite Deschamps labeling Spain as favorites, De la Fuente dismissed such notions as irrelevant. "Being called favorites means nothing. Both teams are strong, just like in the other semi-final. I don't see the point in such labels because whether we are favorites or not is completely inconsequential," he remarked.
Spain's Path to the Semi-Finals
Spain bounced back from an initial goalless draw against Cape Verde to top Group H, subsequently eliminating Austria, Portugal, and Belgium, with Mikel Merino scoring crucial late goals in the knockout rounds. La Roja has now gone 36 matches without a loss in regulation time since March 2024 and could match Italy's all-time record of 37 if they avoid defeat against France. As Spain stands on the brink of returning to the World Cup final for the first time in 16 years, De la Fuente emphasized the importance of seizing this rare opportunity. "I remind the players to enjoy this moment; it may never come again. We must be ourselves and respect the strengths of our opponents. We must believe in our desire to advance. We will give everything to reach the final," he concluded.
